Derwin James vs. The World & King of the Hill - Week 5 Recap
Derwin demolishes Dockery, Joke fights to stay on top, and a new King of the Hill is crowned for NFL rookies.
Madden Championship Series
NFL athletes are a different breed. There’s a switch inside their heads that just locks them in when they think they have something to prove. So when a player, let’s say Derwin James, decides to send a message, he makes sure that message is loud and clear.

Let’s get on with it.
Derwin James vs. Dockery
You know it’s not going to go great for the challenger when they ask about the Derwin rules after one minute.
Dockery started off saying he’s not much of a Madden player, but focused more on FPS games. Despite the neglect for Madden, he managed to put together a quality drive in the first quarter and actually scored the first offensive touchdown of the season against Derwin. His confidence exploded after that. This … didn’t sit well with Derwin.
Derwin Rules or not, Dockery just wasn’t a match for the Pro Bowl safety. Derwin wasn’t even allowed to pass for most of the game and it didn’t matter as he was just a scoring machine all night long.
Talking about the final score of the game doesn’t do it justice. A final score implies that a game was played at some point. This wasn’t a game. This was Derwin dropping a 90 point burger to send a message. Dockery might just stick to first-person shooters and leave Madden behind after this one.
King of the Hill
Henry Ruggs III vs. Jerry Jeudy
Henry Ruggs III has been dominant throughout King of the Hill. But when his opponent is former Alabama teammate Jerry Jeudy, the trash talk started almost immediately. The energy in this one was electric. They jawed about everything from personal Madden records, jersey swap policy, and even whether or not the Broncos were gonna let Jeudy start taking returns.
Ruggs snagged himself a pair of pick sixes to give himself a comfortable lead. But Jeudy came down with some turnovers himself and answered back to make it a one-score game. It stood at 21-14 by halftime.
Jeudy was locked in during the third quarter, starting the half with a big scoring drive to tie the game at 21. Ruggs answered with a drive of his own, but had to settle for a field goal … that went off the uprights. That left the game tied in the final minutes.
Jeudy made it clear from the start, he was not going to kick a FG to win. It was TD or nothing.. He ate up yards quickly and threw the game-winning touchdown to himself to go up 28-21. He then stopped Ruggs’ drive with an INT.
But it didn’t stop there. Jeudy wanted to rub it into the face of his ‘Bama teammate. He threw a deep pass for another TD and followed that with a two-point conversion to himself.
With that, we have a new NFL Rookie King of the Hill.
Joke vs. SeriousMoe
This was a battle between two competitive Madden legends. Joke is the reigning Madden Bowl champ, Moe is the current Madden Classic champ and a two-time belt winner.
The defensive chops between these two elite players was immediately apparent. Bend but don’t break was the name of the first half as Moe and Joke were constantly reading and making adjustments. It was all business.
The second half provided all the scoring after they were able to get a feel for the schemes they were running. They traded rushing TDs until Joke hit on a monster dot, going up 14-7. That left Moe with a fourth down attempt with less than two minutes left to go. He kept the drive alive and continued marching, eating away his yards and timeouts. Joke came away with another INT to close out the game 14-7 to remain King of the Hill in the MCS Pros bracket.
But a quick takeaway, Moe admitted that he hadn’t been putting the same time in as his MCS colleagues. He came in and was able to really push Joke. The two adjusted on the fly better than anyone so far this season. That not only solidifies Joke’s position on top, but the rest of the MCS should take note. Moe is getting his time in now and both of these guys are here to play.
